Crazy Audition . . .
I was in an auditorium among hundreds of people and we were waiting to audition for a musical. You had to sing two numbers and I was trying to figure out what to sing. Among all the people, there were two women around me and every time I thought of a song, one of them would be singing it or humming it. I wanted to sing something original, not what someone else was singing. After thinking of four or five songs I started getting frustrated with this one woman. She was white haired, kind of chunky but on the tall side, wearing a satiny blue dress and a hat. I told her 'you must be reading my mind, every time I think of a song you sing it'. She just smiled and walked away. Finally I thought of Me and Bobby McGee and started singing it to make sure I knew all the words, there were a couple of places I wasn't sure of so, frustrated, I tried to think of other songs. But no matter if it was Carol King, The Carpenters, Linda Rondstadt . . . those two always sang what ever I was thinking. The thing was that I was amazed I had the courage to audition. Near waking I realized even if I got the part I'd probably get stage fright and not be able to pull it off.
